About

Photo: Poppy aged 8 weeks on the day she joined our family on 14 January 2014.

The name Papoulab is based on our foundation girl Poppy, with papoula being Portuguese for Poppy, reflecting the Portuguese origin of our family name, Prata (meaning ‘silver’) and of course, labrador.

Papoulab was established to promote the very best aspects of the labrador retriever by producing puppies that conform to the labrador breed standard while bringing you a new family member who will be loving, devoted and your very best friend.

Poppy is black and has had two litters – a total of 20 puppies! On 7 February 2017 she safely delivered 11 puppies – 4 chocolate, 5 black and two yellow who went to their families in April 2017. On 21 January 2019 Poppy delivered 9 puppies – 4 black, 3 chocolate and 2 yellow who joined their families in March 2019. We hold regular meet-ups and the pups just love getting together with each other. Both litters were sired by Grand Champion Kelindebar Power of Magic (Dougie).

Our current breeding girl is Pippa (Papoulab Astrea), one of Poppy’s daughters from her second litter. She is expecting an all yellow litter on 6 February 2023 and we are now taking expressions of interest. The stud dog is Grand Champion Kelindebar English Oak.

All Papoulab puppies are:

  • registered with Dogs Victoria
  • vaccinated (first shots), vet checked, regularly wormed and microchipped
  • socialised in a family environment

No puppies will be affected by EIC (exercise induced collapse) or PRA (progressive retinal atrophy), nor any known labrador heritable diseases as parents will have full DNA clearances, as well as below average hip and elbow scores. To ensure excellent conformity to the breed standard, only Australian champions or dogs with a significant number of championship points will be used as stud dogs.

Our training philosophy

We support training based on positive reinforcement (reward-based training) and do not subscribe to training methods based on dominance and outdated ‘pack theory’ ideas.
